Business SEO: No Longer a Trend, Now a Way of Life

There are lots of ways to start a business. Maybe you want to open a brick and mortar shop. Maybe you’ve decided to start your own consulting agency. Maybe you’ve decided that you want to make money online. On whatever avenue you pursue financial freedom, there are two things that are universally true: your business is going to need a website and you are going to need to do some serious business SEO.

Most of us are familiar with the basic concept of SEO. According to this SEO overview, search engine optimization is the umbrella term used to define all of the steps you take to make sure people can find your website online.

SEO used to be relatively easy to master. More than anything else, it was a numbers game. The more links that pointed in to your site, the better your site would rank within search results. Over time, though, the search engines have cracked down on the methods people were using to game the system and have reconfigured their algorithms to favor organic methods.

SEO: No Longer a Trend, Now a Way of Life

Why Do You Need Business SEO?

Beyond the whole “everybody else is doing it” platitude, the reason you need to do SEO is so that people will actually find your website when they search for what you provide online. Most people do not actually look at every page of a search result. They look at the first few and choose among those listed there. If your site is not listed in those few pages, your business is going to have a hard time staying relevant; especially if your business is web-based. It is also worth noting that older methods of finding new services, shops, providers, etc. are all but obsolete. Think about it: when was the last time you looked for anybody in a phone book or read the classified section of your local newspaper? Heck, when was the last time you read a physical copy of a newspaper?

How SEO Works

Search engines routinely send their bots and spiders out to crawl the web. These bots and spiders look at every bit of your website and measure it against their programmed algorithms. The rank you are assigned within a search will depending on how well you fit what they are looking for. Nobody knows exactly how the algorithms are coded but we know that ranking well involves a combination of both Organic and Targeted SEO techniques.

What is Organic SEO?

Organic business SEO is, basically, the stuff you are already doing to draw people to your website. By publishing great content that other people want to link to, you “naturally” elevate your position within search engine rankings. Building your site to rank for specific keywords and linking out to other sites that are relevant to your own are other methods of using organic seo for your business. Finally, you know those regular updates you make to your site? Those are like search engine spider bait. By simply maintaining your site, you’re encouraging the search engines to notice you.

Targeted SEO

In addition to the organic methods that you’re using for your SEO, some targeted SEO marketing campaigns are also a good idea. These campaigns could include techniques like creating a content marketing plan for publishing works on other websites that link back to yours. Making sure that your site is listed in relevant directories and creating robust social media presences are also a big part of doing SEO “on purpose.”

Most of this likely isn’t news to you. We all know the basics of how SEO works. What you might not realize, however, is just how vital SEO is to your company’s success. The days of finding things without the help of a search engine are over. This means you need to do the work to stay on the search engines’ good sides. Organic and Targeted SEO will help you do exactly that.

  1. Who ever said SEO was a trend? Are there people that thought search engines were a trend, too? As long as search engines exist, so will SEO, and I don’t see search engines going away anytime soon.

  2. SEO is more like a need and it should be done properly. I just saw one of my friend’s business website who is in Canada and I told him on the face that his website sucks and it needs some improvements and SEO. Those businesses which are offline can also see an increase in their sales with the right SEO done for business website.

  3. The choice of words and terminology weren’t meant to be too literal. SEO was trendy and is now necessary. In a sense it is trending… trending upward as more and more small and local businesses put more of a focus on SEO.

  4. If you have a online presence through website or a blog and are on social media, then you must have heard about search engine optimization -SEO. When you type in a word on Google, it turns up a list of searches. Some items appear at the top of the list, others at the bottom, and others still in the next pages. This is basically search engine optimization at work. the sites that appear at the top and on the first page of Google when you type in a keyword are the sites with high rankings and good SEO.

Rankings are simply vanity metrics you can use to boost your ego. Checking that website is built on solid foundations and few tweaks to your site can skyrocket your website up local search terms. Search engines improve your rankings based not just on hits, but also on the length of time of each hit. You can measure your visits to your site by using things like StatCounter. Using discussion boards and forums is an effective way to keep traffic on your website for quite a while.
