Losing Focus in Your Small Business—It’s Not Always a Bad Thing

If you lived during the time of Christopher Columbus, veering off course when sailing across the uncharted seas could have serious negative consequences—or it could have led you to amazing new discoveries. But when you veer away from what should be the aim of your small business and lose focus, it can make it harder to reach your original goals and cause you to lose sight of the original mission you had for your company.

And yet, losing focus has happened to us all at one point or another, hasn’t it? I know it has for me—at times I’ve had my attention stolen by things that didn’t serve the greater good of my marketing business.

Maybe I took on a client in an industry that required more research and work than the core industries we focus on. Or maybe I decided to start doing more public speaking, even though it made me uncomfortable and didn’t really bring me new business.

Only 60 women throughout history have shattered the ultimate glass ceiling and ran the boardroom of a Fortune 500 company. Think about that, that number is telling.  If you crunch the numbers that less than an average of two-percent.  It has gotten slightly better in modern times, but the number is still way too long.  Today, only 6.4% of Fortune 500 corporations are run by female CEOs.

To provide some further insight into this, KDM Engineering recently examined every female-run fortune 500 company since 1972. While the current percentage of female CEOs in leadership positions is on an upward projection, it’s still low. The company behind the data, KDM engineering is run by a female, African American CEO and had a lot of passion behind raising awareness for this issue.

The Top 200 Startups Around the World

Kempler industries recently analyzed the top 200 startups around the world using live data from Startup Ranking. The goal of the analysis was to have a better understanding of what types of businesses are trending worldwide and which countries produce the most startups.

They then segmented the top 200 startups into 19 different categories based on what they allow end-users to accomplish. These categories include transportation, search, buying selling, finding, and publishing, among others.
